DWR Durable Water Repellency is a coating applied to the outside face of the above fabric which causes the water to bead and run off the surface very efficiently without wetting the actual fibres of the fabric. This greatly enhances the waterproof and Moisture permeable features described above.
The DWR coating in time wears or washes off and can be restored by ironing the surface of the garment using low heat or warm to hot temperature only with cotton covering between the iron and the garment. |

MICROPOROUS WATERPROOF/BREATHABLE Microporous PU coatings or film laminates have microscopic holes which are too small for water droplets to penetrate but large enough for moisture vapour to escape.
Hydrophilic coatings use PU polymers on the inside surface which attract moisture and transfer it to the outer surface where it can evaporate.
Waterproof rating of fabrics is measured as the hydrostatic pressure it will take to force water through the fabric,this can be in millimetres of head or kilopascals(Kpa),Moisture permeability is measured in grms in 24hrs. 3,000 grms at the lower end and 20,000 grms for very high performance. |
